Reading Corinthians ~

This begins a series of studies into the first epistle to the Corinthian church, aka 1 Corinthians. In this session we look at the historical, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds that are present in the writing of the epistle. We also examine the literary and rhetorical perspectives that will guide our studies. We then peruse the first nine verses, the introduction to the letter.

Our primary guide through our studies will be Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes: Cultural Studies in 1 Corinthians by Kenneth E. Bailey. Additional resources are listed in the study outline provided with this session.

“Regardless of all the ethical and theological failings that Paul found in the church in Corinth, he was confident that the Corinthians would stand “guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” O that the antagonists in church fights in every age might maintain this amazing confidence.”
